Giant "Space Invaders" game


Join your friends against the enemy side!!

Space Invaders was designed and programmed by Toshihiro Nishikado for Taito in 1978. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of this game, a classic among classics, the RetroEuskal 2008 invites you to participate in a game where each participant in the Euskal Encounter 2008 will be able to contribute a bit to destroy the enemy side. There will be a coupon for everyone attending the Euskal Encounter 2008 which can be used to participate in the giant "Space Invaders" game. Will the defenses on planet Earth be able to stop the hordes of invaders? Will space invaders destroy the defensive laser cannons and conquer the planet? The victory of one of the two sides is in your hands!!

 

Summary of the Macrogame

To be sincere, even the most optimistic expectations were surpassed, from different points of view: the look of the metal board and scaled magnetic cards, playability, and mainly, the participation and continuous interest of the people present at the Euskal Encounter 2008. Sincerely, all you guys made this game something incredible, as can be seen in the selected pictures.

 

Some statistics about the development of the game:
  • 307 participants in the game, which went on for 3 days (21 hours in total)
    • Participation statistics per hour and accumulated total .
    • Laser cannon: 222 commands (72% of total)
      • 66 movements to the right
      • 52 movements to the left
      • 104 shots (45 destroyed invaders + 2 mystery ships, success 45%)
    • Space invaders: 85 bombs (28% of total)
No computer or other electronic device was used to "execute" this game, with the exception of a digital camera whose function was to shoot a picture of every step of the game.
In the stop-motion video of the game you can note the hard battle that took place. Two are the keys to the final victory of the space invaders:
  1. The survivor space invader on the left, which makes the squadron of invaders move down quickly, and
  2. The movement to the right performed by the laser cannon in step 293 to avoid a bomb impact, which allows invaders to corner and destroy it. After a new laser cannon is delivered, invaders reach their objective in just three steps.

 

Thank you very much indeed to all the participants, specially to those who visited us repeatedly to check out how the game was going on. A special mention to the unforgettable strategy lessons during the final steps of the game; sometimes it looked like a chess game!!! Finally, congratulations to prize winners!!

 

Game Rules

The development of the Giant "Space Invaders" game is the following:

 

  1. At the beginning of the Euskal Encounter, the RetroEuskal people will "initialize" a Space Invaders game.
  2. Bring your coupon to the RetroEuskal area where it will be "executed" in the current game:
    • If you belong to the space invaders side, use your coupon to choose which invader ship drops a bomb.
    • If you belong to the defender side, analize the game state carefully and decide whether you use your coupon to fire the laser cannon or to move it to the right or to the left, to avoid the enemy bombs.
  3. Each time a coupon is interchanged by a shot or movement, people from the RetroEuskal "execute" a new computation step in the following order: the space invaders squadron moves in the expected direction, the laser cannon moves if the coupon was interchanged by a movement, each invader bomb falls a little, and each laser blast moves upwards.
  4. Bunkers are destroyed partially when impacted by a laser blast or a bomb.
  5. If a bomb and a laser blast meet, both are destroyed.
  6. If a bomb hits the laser cannon, the defender side loses one life and the game goes on with a new laser cannon located in the middle. If no laser cannon remains, the number of victories of space invaders increases and a new game is started.
  7. If a laser blast hits a space invader, the score of defenders increases in 10 points. When all the invader squadron is destroyed, the number of victories of defenders increases and a new game is started.
  8. If the invader squadron reaches the level of the laser cannon, the space invaders win that game and a new one is started.
  9. Randomly, a mystery ship will cross the "screen"; its destruction increases in 100 points the defenders score.
  10. Right before the closing of the Euskal Encounter the Space Invaders game will finish and the victory is for that side with more partial victories. To break a tie, the side with a higher score is the winner (each survivor invader values 10 points).

Each person can interchange one coupon only but we encourage you to find other Euskal Encounter participants on your side: visit together the RetroEuskal area to execute several commands in a row and get the opposite side into trouble!!
